Finding balance in your life can sometimes feel so overwhelming. We dream of a healthy body, a beautiful family, eight hours of sleep, bubble baths, pilates classes, golfing five days a week, extended vacations and endless financial and material wealth, then abruptly awake to our real lives of too much work, not enough play and chips for dinner. Where does one start to connect the dream with the reality? How does one move from their current state of being to a more desirable state of being?
When it comes to finding more balance in your life, the starting line is your own health. Why? Because by learning and living some very basic rules about how to take care of your body and mind, you give yourself the strength, energy, clarity and confidence to tackle the harder stuff. Your health is your foundation. A foundation is a support structure making whatever is then built on top of it stronger and more likely to last for a long period of time. A healthy foundation is the only foundation that can support a life of balance. Here are five easy ways to strengthen your foundation thus giving you the strength, energy, clarity and confidence to start making other changes in your life. 1. Drink water. Water hydrates and cleans your body. Water boosts your brainpower by injecting it with some much-needed oxygen. Water wakes you up and keeps you energized. Stressful mind clutter can be easily cleared out with a tall glass of water, allowing for a moment of mindful peace. 2. Eat whole foods. Whole foods provide your body with the most nutrients, vitamins and healthy proteins/carbs/fats. The more you feed your body good food, the more resilient and confident you become. The more resilient and confident you are, the more you are able to draw boundaries, declare your worth in terms of output (not measured input), and prioritize commitments over obligations. 3. Breathe. Not the short constant breaths that your body does automatically, but deep breathing, from your belly, through your body to your brain, and with an exhale like you mean it. Breathing not only brings clarity to your mind (anytime oxygen hits your brain en masse, good things happen), but it also brings relaxation to your body. Our bodies, in a state of relaxation, begin to remember what it feels like to feel good, and feeling good is what life in balance is all about. 4. Move your body. Exercise, walk, dance, swim, golf — just get off the sofa and move! Besides increasing your creativity and clarity (yes, oxygen to the brain again!), movement creates a sense of euphoria. The happier you feel, the more desire you have to move forward in the direction of your dreams. Sitting = stagnation. Moving = attaining. 5. Relax. Find time and activities in your day that make you feel relaxed and happy. Sleep, reading, TV with your partner, bedtime reading to your kids. Too much Stress can kill you, so you need to find ways to relax. Yes, you do have time, and the more you take that time, the more balance enters your life. How you do one thing is how you do everything. Making healthy choices for your own body and mind will lead to making healthy choices for your life. How will you start? What a most incredible spring day, here in Vancouver, Washington. The temperature is 60 degrees with a real feel of 62!! Woot, Woot, spring has sprung! The daffodils are in bloom!
When the weather is like this I am reminded that the simple pleasures of life bring me peace. This peace I try to incorporate in many areas of my life. And the older I get, I find that the ease comes as a result of simplifying my life. Simply how I shop, where I shop, what my morning routine consists of , even personal style. I am a pretty basic, no-fuss kind of gal. Take my skincare regimen...I basically use only 3, sometimes 4 products for cleansing, tone, anti-oxidants and moisturizing. My skin has not been this healthy until this past year when I made a decision to simplify and make skincare easy. Today, in magazines, in commercials and in stores the big theme is Anti-Aging! Scrub this, moisturize that, plump here, fill those and the directives go on and on. I do have a background of working in the beauty business when I was in my 30's and makeup and color where the rage. Fancy eyeliners, shadows, primers, lashes, lipsticks, powder...you name it I owned it! and not just 1 cosmetic line, I owned all the latest products from at least 4 big cosmetic companies. Today, I am smarter and wiser (or at least I would hope to be) about what the basics are to anti-ageing and effective skincare. Cleansing my face with face wipes from Simple! They are the cleanest, most effective wipe I believe and the kindest to my skin. No heavy perfumes or chemicals. Next I want to nourish and feed my skin and the easiest most pure and effective serum that I have found is by Touchstone Essentials. Their Super Serum is all plant based and just a small pump covers my entire face and neck. This product has faded my freckles (sun spots, really) diminished fines lines around my eyes and mouth, deeply penetrates my skin to firm and moisturize. I finish my routine with a moisturizer with coconut water as its base. The last product I use is the Anti-Oxidant drink everyday. Really this drink is my sport drink of choice and I found that it enhances the skincare routine by providing much needed nutrients from the inside to support the products from the outside. So smart, and so simple! It doesn't take much to look your best, no matter what your age. As of late I have had many conversations with friends and loved ones about dreaming. Do you remember the last time you sat and had a moment of dreaming, imagining things bigger and more grand than today? I have found myself the last week awake very early in the morning, around 3am, wide awake and eager to get up out of bed and ponder the day to come, the time to come.
I usually am an early bird and have the coffee started somewhere between 430-530 and get myself settled in my favorite chair with the slider slightly open to let a crisp morning breeze into my living room! This time is the greatest time of my day. It is a time of luxury and peace that I wish and hope everyone could experience. Yes, it is easy now. These mornings became a routine after i spent some time purposing to get up early to have time to journal, pray and read. Most days that I begin this way are the most peace filled days in my life. Even writing about this time brings a big grin to my face! This year hasn't been filled with many mornings like these. You see earlier this year, in January my mom passed, and I was unprepared for the variety of emotions that I have experienced. Many days and nights I would be numb, just kind of wandering throughout my day. At the least likely time I would feel this huge wave of emotion engulf me. Deep sadness and I would be so weepy. I can honestly tell you I had NO thoughts. I had a routine of living those days early this year. Unfortunately during this time I had offended my friends with my lack of interest and interaction in their lives. I was unable to explain my feelings and emotions, and apologizing seemed flat, and I was apologizing to so many people. My routine would be get up, make coffee, and sit! I would catch myself just sitting with a blank stare out the window, thought-less. Hmm, kind of hard to believe or even imagine what that state would be like unless you have experienced it yourself. You see, grief and loss are different for each and every person. Loss is the separation from or removal of something meaningful to an individual. Simply put, something was taken away in such a way as not to be retrieved. I had lost my focus, my desires, motivation and joy of dreaming. This year has been about finding a new norm, a new chapter, a new time and in this new time the opportunity to have new dreams. I believe that I am coming out of a fog into a new environment and life of health and hope.! I want to dream BIG, GRAND and in exceptionally amazing ways! So in my mornings I am enjoying the time of wandering thoughts playing the "what if" game. It is a slow process, this time of spring when new life and buds are becoming visible is the perfect word picture to visualize what I am experiencing. Dreams! I look forward with great anticipation to the development of my dreams and desires. My daily journal entries seem so full of anticipation, and wonder. In future blogs I will share, and in the meantime please share with me some of your dreams! Send me an email about "what if..." Share with me your dreams!!! I encourage you, DREAM!
